NOT YOUR OWN 1. Live for God, not for yourself (2 Cor. 5:15; Phil. 2:21; 1 Peter 4:1–2). 2. Why? a. because you are not your own (1 Cor. 6:19–20). b. because you belong to the Lord (Rom. 14:7–9; cf. Ezek. 18:4). c. because He purchased you with His own blood (1 Cor. 6:20). d. because you are slaves of God and of Christ (Rom. 6:16, 22; 1 Cor. 7:22). e. because you have been crucified with Christ (Gal. 2:20). f. because your citizenship is in heaven (Phil. 3:20; cf. "aliens and strangers" 1 Peter 2:11; "ambassadors" 2 Cor. 5:20) 3. To accept the lordship of Christ is to be obedient to Christ (Luke 6:46). 4. Worldliness versus the Christian way of life: a. worldliness • "lovers of self" (2 Tim. 3:2) • "caring for themselves" (Jude 12) • "self-willed" (2 Peter 2:10) • "set their minds on earthly things" (Phil. 3:19) b. the Christian way of life • "do not love the world, nor the things in the world" (1 John 2:15; cf. 2:16–17) • "taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ" (2 Cor. 10:5) • "not self-willed" (Titus 1:7) • "set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth" (Col. 3:2; cf. 3:3)
