RESURRECTION BODY THE RESURRECTION • each member of the godhead participated in raising Jesus from the dead: the Father (Acts 2:24, 32; 10:40; 13:30; Rom 6:4; Eph 1:20), Son (John 2:19; 10:17-18), and Holy Spirit (Rom 8:11) • Jesus appeared repeatedly for 40 days (Acts 1:3) to more than 500 people (1 Cor 15:6) on 12 occasions (to Mary Magdalene, John 20:11–17; to the other Mary and Salome, Matt 28:9–10; to Peter, Luke 24:34; to the two disciples on the way to Emmaus, Luke 24:13–32; to the 10 apostles, Luke 24:33–49; to Thomas and the other 10 apostles, John 20:26–30; to the seven apostles, John 21:1–25; to all the apostles in Galilee, Matt 28:16–20; to 500 brethren, 1 Cor 15:6; to James, 1 Cor 15:7; to the 11 apostles before his ascension, Acts 1:4–9; to the Apostle Paul, 1 Cor 15:8) JESUS' RESURRECTION BODY • the resurrection body is the old body changed or transformed (allasso) rather than a new body created (cf. 1 Cor 15:51–52) • his resurrection body could be seen by the naked eye (John 20:20b) • he was not immediately recognized by his disciples (Luke 24:13–31; 36–39; John 20:14–16) • his resurrection body could be touched (Matt 28:9; Luke 24:39; John 20:17, 27–28) • his resurrection body was composed of flesh and bone (Luke 24:39–40) • his resurrection body retains the scars in his hands, feet, and side (Luke 24:39; John 20:20, 24–29; Rev 5:6) • angels apparently brought him clothes to wear since the soldiers cast lots for his clothes (Matt 27:35; John 19:23–24) • his resurrection body was able to breathe (John 20:22) • he walks (Luke 24:15, 28–29), lies down (Luke 24:30), breaks bread and prays (Luke 24:30) in his resurrection body • his voice may sound the same (John 20:15–16) • he was able to eat and drink (Luke 24:30; John 21:12–13; Acts 10:41) but his resurrection body does not need food and water (1 Cor 6:13): he intentionally ate food in the upper room to prove to his disciples that he was not a spirit (Luke 24:41–43) • his resurrection body was not limited by distance or physical barriers: he was able to appear and disappear at will (Luke 24:31, 36) and he entered locked rooms without difficulty (John 20:19, 26) • his resurrection body does not require rest: there is no mention of Jesus being weary or sleeping after His resurrection • his resurrection body is immortal (Rom 6:9; Rev 1:18); people who were resuscitated still had mortal bodies and died again (Luke 7:11–15; 8:49–56; John 11:43–44) • his resurrection body was not glorified during his forty day post-resurrection ministry, but after his ascension into heaven Jesus always appears in his glory (Acts 9:3–6; Rev 1:12–20) OUR RESURRECTION BODIES • we will all receive resurrection bodies at the rapture (1 Cor 15:51–52; 1 Thess 4:15–17) • our earthly body is compared to a "tent…torn down" and our resurrection body to "a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.…longing to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven" (2 Cor 5:1–4) • the change (allasso) will be instantaneous—"in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye" (1 Cor 15:51–52) • our resurrection bodies will be just like Christ's (Phil 3:20–21; 1 John 3:2) • our resurrection bodies will be immortal (1 Cor 15:42, 53–54), powerful (1 Cor 15:43), and glorious (1 Cor 15:43; Phil 3:20–21) • we will rule with Christ (Rev 2:26–27; 3:21) and judge the world (1 Cor 6:2–3) in resurrection bodies during the Millennium
